What would it take for the European Union to reach its goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050?...
What would it take for the European Union to reach its goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050? Explore a potential scenario developed by McKinsey. McKinsey’s Sustainability Insights practice developed a detailed perspective on a cost-effective, feasible pathway to a net-zero Europe. The analysis identified the optimal uses of more than 600 emissions-reduction levers in 75 subsectors and ten regions and assessed their impact on employment and other socioeconomic factors. In this scenario, Europe can reach net-zero emissions at net-zero cost, while yielding a net gain of 5 million jobs. Sectors would need to reduce emissions in parallel and reach net-zero in sequence. Findings indicate that more than half the emissions reductions could be achieved with mature and early-adoption technologies while energy systems and land use would need to be reconfigured.
