Climate targets for agriculture and forestry

Setting emissions targets to stay below 2°C
On 25 September 2015, the University of Aberdeen, PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and Ecofys will host an online stakeholder workshop that brings together companies, NGOs, and sector experts ranging from farmers to retail. Participants will learn more about science-based emission reduction in agriculture and forestry, and provide their input to a decarbonisation methodology which will be developed over the next 8 months.

Funded by the KR Foundation, the Dutch-British consortium developing the methodology together with experts in the field of AFOLU emissions. The approach is based on previous work for the Science Based Targets initiative of CDP, UN Global Compact, WRI and WWF. With this methodology, companies can determine a fair share of emission reductions and make their own operations and supply chain 2°C compatible. The methodology will also allow NGOs and policy makers to benchmark the targets and actions for the agriculture and forestry sector. To create emissions intensity pathways towards the year 2050, the team assesses the current emissions, abatement potentials and costs of climate smart agricultural solutions for 10 major commodities (i.e. meat, dairy, poultry, pig, rice, wheat, maize, soy, palm oil, round wood) and model this in an integrated scenario to stay below 2°C at the lowest cost.
