Royal Vopak is the world's largest independent tank storage company by capacity, specialized in the storage and handling of oil products, liquid chemicals and gasses. As per 27 February 2015, Vopak operates 80 terminals in 28 countries with a combined storage capacity of 33.8 million cbm, with another 6.2 million cbm under development, to be added by 2019. Vopak’s mission is to ensure safe, reliable and effective storage and handling of bulk liquid products at key marine locations that are critical to its customers around the world. The majority of its customers are companies operating in the oil, chemicals and gas sector, for which Vopak stores a large variety of products destined for a wide range of industries. Vopak's strategic focus is on four categories of terminals: Major hubs, supporting intercontinental product flows; Terminals facilitating growth in global gas markets; Import and distribution terminals in major markets with structural deficits; Industrial and chemicals terminals in the Americas, the Middle East and Asia.

Junior Application Consultant

Goal function
Vopak GIS (Global Information Services) globally manages Vopak’s common applications for all its terminals, and some local applications for specific regions. GIS consists of several staff departments and teams. As an Application Consultant you have a role in the alignment of the Vopak demand organization, Vopak GIS and external software vendors. It is a hybrid role combining business knowledge with IT experience. The main goal is to support the acquisition, implementation and maintenance of applications that, during their lifecycle, will meet the business requirements and enhance the business operation. The activities will be executed in the context of projects, as member of the project team, or independently as part of incident-, change- problem- and release management.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Advises on the acquisition and implementation of new applications and co-ordinates changes and releases for existing common applications in a controlled manner, to ensure business continuity;
  • Performs 3rd level support on incidents and solves problems;
  • Participates in projects ongoing within his functional domain;
  • Formulates specifications for changes, on the basis of functional requirements received from corporate demand management (corporate business process analysts);
  • Formulates specifications on non-functional requirements and integration requirements;
  • Co-ordinates day-to-day design, configuration and development activities by the external supplier; act as sparring partner to developers;
  • Ensures delivery of changes in time, within budget and to the required quality, also taking into account the Service Level Agreements applicable for the service;
  • Organizes and performs the functional acceptance test of new releases, including the functional integration test;
  • Facilitates the acceptance testing of new releases by the business;
  • Composes test plans to ensure operational continuity and to detect design errors;
  • Ensures the correct use of IT standards set by the CIO Office;
  • Safeguards process quality and the planning of releases. Proposes bundling of changes into releases according to priority, while guarding an acceptable risk profile;
  • Participates in the change advisory board (CAB) regarding changes to the applications they manage;
  • Advises the Application Owners regarding Life Cycle Plans.

Skills & experience

  • Higher vocational level of IT;
  • Work experience up to maximum five years in the logistics domain;
  • Good communication skills (Dutch and English, verbal and written);
  • Takes ownership;
  • Customer oriented, efficient, initiative taking team worker who is able to analyze problems without losing sight of result and quality;
  • Experience with logistics (Customs, Planning, Order Entry, Stock control, Technical Automation, etc.)
  • Act pro-active to stimulate improvement;
  • Basic knowledge of:
    - Agile / Scrum software development;
    - ITIL / Service Management (Pré).
